On July 21, Garvin Design Group and Hood Construction joined members of the University of South Carolina community for a special grand opening event and tour of the recently completed Idea Center. The Idea Center occupies three levels of the 11-story Gateway 737 building at the corner of Gadsden and Greene Streets in downtown Columbia.
Completed on an accelerated schedule, the nearly 44,000-sf Idea Center is the newest collaboration hub for the University of South Carolina. The Idea Center is intended to serve University students, faculty, and staff, and includes:
- Two 400-person flex spaces
- Meeting rooms
- Craft room
- Catering kitchen
- Event space overlooking Colonial Life Arena
“This project presented unique opportunities to celebrate USC brand colors and elements in new, creative ways,” said Garvin Design Group Interior Designer Liza Brockman. “The exciting design challenge here was softening a concrete shell space while creating an atmosphere of sophistication and modernity.”
The lively and playful interior design of the Idea Center reflects the space’s active programming and diverse user groups and encourages users to stay long after their meeting has ended.
"This project is a testament to the CM-R process and how all team members work hand in hand to make our client's vision a reality," said Hood Construction Vice President, Construction Management, Dean Wilson.
